The function of linking words

Linking devices are neither nouns, no verbs. They provide a text with cohesion and illustrate how the parts of the text relate to each other. Here are some of the functions which linking words provide.

What we can do with the linking words?

*Adding extra information to the main point.
*Contrasting ideas.
*Expressing cause and effect.
*Showing exactly when something happened.
*Expressing purpose and opinion.
*Making conclusions and giving emphasis.

Linking words

* Whereas there are more Subways than McDonald's, McDonald's sells more food every year.

* Despite the English having a better cricket team, they are not going to beat the Irish cricket team on thursday.

* The situation with the American resecion is so strong that lots of people are losing their jobs, for this reason some of these people can't afford health care in the USA.

* Although women work 66% more than men, they earn 10% less than men in any kind of job.

Venezuela is One

Venezuela is divided in 23 states, and the most important city in my country is Caracas, the capital. However, in one of this states, Zulia, some of the people who live there say they have the most important state in Venezuela just because most of the petrol which my country sells is produced there. Besides being stupid and mean, they also want to gain a kind of independence. For this reason there is a conflict between these states.

Politicians in Venezuela don't care about this kind of thing, but I think that it is very important. Because it makes a country lose the focus on built a stronger and better system of govermment, therefore people have to understand that this kind of thing doesn't help the society.

Despite having this situation my country is very proud about all that we have and everyday several people work to make a country better just working, just looking after our things and our identity. For me, this is the most important thing.
